The Manager, Accounting is responsible for managing the financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, commission reconciliation, accounts payables, and providing leadership to the accounting team. This role plays a key part in ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant financial reporting, while also driving continuous improvement initiatives across finance operations. The successful candidate will collaborate cross-functionally with department leaders, offering financial insights and guidance to support strategic planning and decision-making. In addition to managing day-to-day accounting activities, the Manager will mentor junior staff, uphold internal controls, and contribute to the ongoing development of efficient financial systems and workflows. This is a hands-on leadership role that requires strong analytical skills, a proactive mindset, and a commitment to operational excellence.
What does the Manager, Accounting do?
- Monthly Financial Reporting: Oversee the preparation and review of financial statements, journal entries, and reconciliations, providing insightful variance analyses that guide leadership decisions.
- Lead Budgeting Financial Planning, & Cash Management: Collaborate with department leaders to develop, monitor, and maintain budgets that support strategic growth and operational efficiency.
- Oversee Commission Reconciliation & Reporting: Oversee the preparation and reconciliation of insurance transactions, prepare reasonableness tests, and provide reporting and variance analysis.
- Lead Audit Preparation & Support: Act as the audit senior, prepare and review working papers, record audit adjustments, and liaise with external auditors during the annual audit process.
- Manage Accounts Payable & Internal Invoicing: Ensure timely vendor payments, accurate SG&A invoicing, and streamlined cash flow management.
- Assist with Broker Management System Enhancement: Assist in the development and enhancement of the Broker Management System.
- Oversee Related Party Reporting: Manage full-cycle accounting for related parties (including a charity), ensuring transparency and compliance.
- Champion Accuracy & Controls: Maintain internal controls and ensure compliance with accounting standards and legal requirements while optimizing workflows.
- Resolve Client & Vendor Inquiries: Act as the primary contact for issue resolution, providing professional, timely responses that reflect BIG’s commitment to partnership and service.
- Drive Effective Communication: Manage inboxes and support queues to ensure efficient communication flow across teams and stakeholders.
- Lead & Develop a High-Performing Team: Empower and mentor accounting staff, oversee daily workflows, and cultivate a culture of accountability, growth, and collaboration.
- Collaborate Across Functions: Partner with other departments to align financial processes and deliver cohesive support across the organization.
- Provide Financial Insights: Offer advisory support and actionable recommendations to the Controller, VP of Finance, and leadership team.
You’ll also take the lead on:
- Developing and enhancing the Accounts Payable module to improve efficiency, transparency, and reporting.
- Consolidating quarterly and board reporting packages with precision and timeliness.
- Leading continuous improvement initiatives to refine processes, strengthen controls, and enhance reporting visibility.
- Identifying financial trends and KPIs that drive smarter decision-making and sustainable growth.
- Contributing to ad hoc projects that support BIG’s ongoing transformation and success.

Qualifications
Required:
- Completion of a post-secondary education diploma or equivalent in Accounting, Finance or related field
- Minimum of 7-10 years of proven experience in finance and/or accounting.
- A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation
- Strong computer skills, adaptable to multiple software platforms. Practical experience with accounting software (QuickBooks, ERP software) & spreadsheets (MS Excel).
- Previous Insurance Industry work experience an asset.
- Previous management or supervisory experience.
