We are currently seeking a permanent, full-time Senior Staff Accountant to join our Head Office Accounting team. The Senior Staff Accountant plays a key role in maintaining the financial integrity of the BIG Group of Companies. This position blends hands-on, full-cycle accounting with leadership, mentorship, and process oversight. You’ll support accurate and timely financial reporting, oversee critical accounting workflows (including commissions), and help guide a collaborative accounting team — all while working closely with internal stakeholders across the organization.

What does the Senior Staff Accountant do?
As the Senior Staff Accountant you will play a key role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and consistency of financial operations across the BIG Group of Companies. This role combines hands-on, full-cycle accounting with workflow oversight, mentorship, and cross-functional collaboration to support timely reporting, compliance, and continuous improvement. You’ll act as a trusted financial partner within the organization while helping guide and support the accounting team. In this role, you will:
  • Oversee daily accounting workflows to ensure efficiency, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Manage full-cycle accounting, including commissions, A/P, A/R, and month-end close.
  • Prepare, review, and analyze monthly financial reports.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and ensure data integrity across entities.
  • Support audit preparation and respond to auditor requests.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, regulations, and internal policies.
  • Act as a key contact for commission-related inquiries and accounting support requests.
  • Use QuickBooks and financial systems effectively, recommending improvements as needed.
  • Mentor and support team members to promote collaboration and development.
  • Contribute to process improvements and special projects as required.

Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in Accounting, Bookkeeping, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a finance or accounting role.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience mentoring or overseeing finance administration processes.
  • Strong proficiency with accounting software (QuickBooks or similar) & Microsoft Excel.
  • Previous experience in the insurance industry (an asset).
  • CPA designation or currently working toward CPA certification (an asset).

  • Salary Band 5: $62,000-$79,000
  • Target Hiring Range $62,000 - $66,000
