The Commercial Sales Team Lead is responsible for driving personal sales performance while providing day-to-day guidance, coaching, and support to a team of Commercial Brokers. This role combines active portfolio management and business development responsibilities with leadership accountability, ensuring both individual and team success. The Team Lead supports brokers in developing their skills, expanding their portfolios, and taking on increasingly complex commercial accounts. While this role does not have hire or fire authority, it does include the ability to assign work, monitor performance, and contribute to formal performance evaluations. A successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, mentoring capability, and a client-centric approach.
 
What does the Commercial Sales Team Lead do?
  • Proactively source and develop relationships with prospective clients seeking commercial insurance coverage, ensuring a steady pipeline of new business opportunities.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of client insurance needs, identifying potential risks and recommending appropriate coverage solutions.
  • Research and compare insurance products from various markets to secure optimal coverage aligned with client business requirements.
  • Negotiate policy terms, pricing, and conditions with insurance markets to provide clients with competitive and tailored solutions.
  • Facilitate the end-to-end sales process, from initial consultation through policy issuance and ongoing servicing.
  • Maintain and grow a personal portfolio of commercial clients through exceptional service, proactive communication, and annual policy reviews.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to clients, advocating for their needs with insurance markets and assisting with policy modifications as necessary.
  • Assign new leads and accounts among the team, balancing opportunity and development needs.
  • Provide ongoing one-on-one coaching and mentorship to brokers, supporting their development and technical proficiency.
  • Support team members in managing complex accounts or challenging client issues, stepping in as needed.
  • Monitor team performance, provide input into formal performance reviews, and support goal setting for individual team members.
  • Collaborate with the Learning & Development team to support training initiatives and provide insight into team learning needs.
  • Promote a team culture focused on commercial sales growth, client satisfaction, and continuous professional development.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of client interactions, coverage details, and policy transactions within CRM and internal systems.
  • Collaborate with leadership and underwriting teams to develop strategies that drive business growth and client retention.
  • Educate clients on policy terms, coverage limits, exclusions, and risk management strategies to support informed decision-making.
  • Monitor market trends, regulatory changes, and emerging risks to provide clients with timely and relevant insurance guidance.
  • Participate in industry networking events, professional development opportunities, and training sessions to enhance knowledge and client service capabilities.
  • Share industry insights and best practices with the team to foster continuous improvement and adaptability.

Qualifications:
  • An active and current RIBO License
  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a sales-focused insurance brokerage role, preferably in Commercial Lines.
  • Demonstrated experience in business development and account management within the insurance industry.
  • Proven ability to support, mentor, and influence peers or junior team members.
  • Proficiency in using policy management and CRM systems to manage client interactions and track business development efforts.
  • A university degree in a related field, or a college diploma in Insurance from a Canadian post-secondary institution, or equivalent an asset.
