The Senior Underwriter is responsible for completing an in-depth evaluation of new business submissions, as well as uploading the new business to our valued market partners through their company portal. This position stays updated with industry regulations and market trends to effectively manage risks and comply with legal standards to ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines, market appetite, while maintaining the highest level of professionalism and accuracy.
What does the Senior Underwriter do?
- Evaluates and analyzes insurance applications to determine risk, eligibility, and completion
- Ensure Brokers are strictly following BIG & Market underwriting guidelines and that the submissions are timely and accurate
- Demonstrate excellent customer service when interacting with all Brokers & Market Partners
- Process an average of 15 submissions daily, ensuring all New Business is uploaded within 5 business days
- Address Broker or Market escalations, attempting to deescalate the situation & resolve the issue
- Handles Administrative tasks associated with the Underwriting Team, when required (Change of Broker Codes, Binder List, etc.)
- Initiate contact with our brokers to obtain any missing information or documentation required for the submission.
- Initiate outgoing phone calls to our market partners with submission inquiries
- Address, and ensure any submission inaccuracies are amended
- Monitor & action emails, voicemails, phone calls, and Teams messages
- Onboard & train or facilitate the training of new Underwriters
- Onboard & support team members in training of Underwriters
- Assist the Assistant Underwriting Manager to complete tasks or projects, as needed
- Participate in Underwriting team meetings, as needed
- Participate in Personal Lines team meetings, as necessary

- Strong attention to detail
Qualifications:
- Completion of secondary education diploma or equivalent
- A minimum of at least 3+ years of experience working as a Personal Lines underwriter
- 1-2 years’ experience managing others
- Post-secondary education in Insurance, Business/Office Administration, Economics, Law, Finance, or related field an asset
- RIBO license an asset
- Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) professional designation an asset
- Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker (CAIB) professional designation an asset
